Anyone who touched a bat at the Malibu Café at Calamigos Ranch was advised to call their doctors to report possible rabies exposure.

The potential exposure occurred at the cafe on Saturday, June 4th, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The bat was handled by a couple of adults and probably a group of children, according to officials.

After a probable rabies exposure, it’s critical to seek prophylactic treatment because once symptoms such as lockjaw, fever, weakness, and headache appear, death from respiratory failure can occur quickly.

It is possible for someone to die if preventative intervention is not taken before they become symptomatic.

Rabies is not treated, but it is preventive, according to health professionals.

The bat was no longer available for testing, so it’s unclear if it had rabies. Officials claim, however, that bats can carry rabies and spread the disease through bites or saliva.

The sickness is progressive and affects both humans’ and animals’ neurological systems.

Symptoms of Rabies

“Fever, weakness, and headache are the first symptoms of rabies in people, followed by a tingling sensation, anxiety, agitation, odd behavior, hallucinations, difficulty swallowing, coma, and death,” according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The authority also cautioned that bats may not display any signs of rabies, despite the fact that rabies is most typically discovered in bats in Los Angeles County.

When other animals are affected, they generally display signs of hostility, however, some may simply appear unwell or shy.

If you’ve been exposed to rabies, here’s what you should do.

213-974-1234 is the number to call if you’ve been exposed.

The agency stated that if someone is infected and does not have health insurance, it will provide free preventative therapy.

Anyone who may have come into contact with a bat should seek medical attention.

Officials also advised against touching any sick or dead bats found.

Do you get a Rabies Vaccination?

Preventative treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic, comes in the form of a fast-acting shot that stops the virus from infecting you as soon as possible after a bite or exposure near the site.

“At this moment, there is no evidence that this bat has infected anyone with rabies.” “However, because rabies is nearly always fatal if left untreated, we encourage people to err on the side of caution,” said Dr. Muntu Davis. “Parents should inquire if their children saw or touched any bats while visiting the facility. Anyone who believes they or their child has come into touch with a bat should be assessed right away for possible post-exposure rabies treatment.”

Bats are particularly dangerous, according to the department, since their teeth are so sharp that a bite may go undetected.

Bats have also been the leading cause of rabies illnesses in the county, according to LA County Health.

“In Los Angeles County, 68 rabid bats were discovered in 2021. Since 1961, when bats were first tested for rabies, this is the greatest recorded number of rabid bats found in LA County. In 2022, ten rabid bats have been discovered, according to the agency.
