What is Lupus?

Lupus, also known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect multiple organs and systems in the body. Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system, which is responsible for protecting the body from infections and foreign invaders, mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs.

In lupus, the immune system produces antibodies that attack the body’s own tissues and organs, leading to inflammation and damage. This can affect many different parts of the body, including the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain.

Symptoms of lupus can vary widely but may include fatigue, joint pain and stiffness, skin rashes, fever, hair loss, and sensitivity to sunlight. Because the symptoms of lupus can mimic those of other diseases, it can be difficult to diagnose.

There is currently no cure for lupus, but with proper treatment and management, many people with lupus are able to lead healthy, productive lives. Treatment typically involves medications to manage symptoms and prevent complications, as well as lifestyle modifications such as avoiding sun exposure and getting regular exercise.
