What is Anesthesia?

Anesthesia is a medical procedure that causes a loss of sensation throughout the body. It is a medical treatment that is used to alleviate pain or discomfort during a medical procedure.

 Types of Anesthesia

There are four main types of anesthesia used during surgery and other procedure.

  • General Anesthesia.
  • Regional Anesthesia.
  • sedation Anesthesia.
  • Local Anesthesia.

  • General Anesthesia.

When most people hear the word “anesthesia,” they immediately think of general anesthesia. You are unconscious and have no awareness or sensations while under general anesthesia. Several medications may be administered during general anesthesia. Some are anesthetic gases or vapors administered via a breathing tube or mask. Some medications are administered via IV in order to induce sleep, relax muscles, and treat pain.

  • Regional Anesthesia.

Regional anesthesia numbs a specific area of the body, preventing the patient from feeling pain. It has the potential to completely block sensation to the area of the body requiring surgery. Local anesthesia (numbing medication) is injected by the anesthesiologist near the cluster of nerves that provides sensation to that area.

  • sedation Anesthesia.

Sedation, also known as “monitored anesthesia care,” is what people used to call “twilight” in the past. Medications are administered, usually via IV, to make the patient drowsy and relaxed. Various levels of sedation are available, depending on the procedure and the patient’s preferences.

  • Local Anesthesia.

Anesthesia refers to medications that numb a small area by being injected through a needle or applied as a cream. Local anesthesia may be sufficient for minor procedures such as sewing up a deep cut or filling dental cavities. It is frequently used in conjunction with sedation during minor outpatient surgery. The surgeon may inject local anesthesia at the end of many operations to provide additional pain relief during recovery.

When the patient is unconscious and not feeling pain, local anesthesia is administered. Most surgeries use general anesthesia because it allows the patient to be completely unaware during the procedure, which may result in better surgical outcomes. Regional anesthesia is commonly used for surgeries such as knee or hip replacements, as well as some painful procedures such as colonoscopies. In most cases, general anesthesia is induced by giving the patient an intravenous injection of a medication known as an induction agent, which causes the patient to become sleepy and unable to move. The patient will feel no pain and will be unable to breathe on his own. Following the administration of the induction agent, the patient will be placed under general anesthesia. General anesthesia can also be administered by inhalation (through the nose).
